National Art Gallery of the Bahamas

The Bahamas is very well-established as a vacation paradise. It's politically part of the Caribbean, but geographically a bit too far north, although the cultural milieu is very similar. The history of colonialism in the area is part and parcel of how things are today, and still, the present is very much up for negotiation. Some of the more fascinating cultural activities on the island have tended to be overlooked by the international world, but this is starting to change, and the many faces of the Bahamas are becoming more visible to the world. One of the places to see these changes in action is at NAGB, the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas.

This was established in 1996, so it's still very young as an institution. Here, locals and guests at Bahamas five star hotels can see work by artists who are either from here, or whose work deals with it in a very direct way. One of the recent exhibitions was a collection of the works of Maxwell Taylor, who's worked in the U.S. and Nassau. The collection of prints from 1960-1992 revolve around the subject matter of women from the Bahamas, and the themes are vast and complex. His mother was born here, and these works are an attempt to interrogate female identity on the island, and to reflect on this remarkable history.
