Diverse Singapore Culture

The cultural elements that exist in the whole of Singapore are defined as pan-Asian.  The religious beliefs of the various ethnic groups that now call Singapore their home, are diverse, varied and steeped in tradition, in a city that to the outside world, is becoming increasingly more modern and ultra-futuristic in design and architecture.  The art scene, the constant flow of celebrations and festivals in the temples, in the churches, in the mosques and on the streets, reflect this variety in the backgrounds, this variety in and of the people, the variety of the history of the country.  Taoists, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims from China, India, and the countries of Malaysia, mix and mingle, they share their recipes for food and techniques for craft-works and ideas and thoughts on art and music and philosophy, combining to make this city one of the jewels of South East Asia.

The largest celebration of the year, is the Chinese New Year, which is celebrated by all.  In fact, Singapore hotels fill their rooms with people coming from surrounding cities, and cities from around the world, with those in search of the magical experience of celebrating this particular holiday in the city of Singapore.  When visiting the city, one will find a myriad of choices when it comes to finding an entertaining show for the evening out on the town.  From the smaller theatres to the mainstream, there is never a shortage of performing arts, from music to dance, puppetry and live theatre, Singapore has it all.

One of the best times for a visit, if the art scene is your particular vibe, is during the month of June,  The Singapore Arts Festival brings together not only artists and performing companies from the region, but international artists and companies from around the world.  From the smaller street shows, to the highly produced Broadway touring productions, this is a time when the city has all it has to give, and offers it freely, with vibrancy and with spirit.  The local artists who live and work in the city throughout the remainder of the year, deserve to be mentioned as well.

There are many different styles and themes, again reflecting the incredible diversity, drawing many collectors and distributors of the world of art to the city of Singapore each and every week.  Some of the more popular galleries include the Singapore Art Museum, The Sub-Station, and those located up and down Bras Basah Road.  In these galleries there are works of installation from artists of the area as well as a large collection of works from the contemporary and the abstract world of painting.  For an all around cultural experience, be it in art, fine dining, live shows or entertainment, Singapore is the place to be.
