Bagpipes in Bermuda

When traveling to Bermuda, one can usually count on certain things. There will be plenty of exquisite beach, a sumptuous array of Caribbean food, and some gorgeous luxury Bermuda hotels to while away that days in splendor. There are also local traditions and customs that are celebrated in the lively island music. One can find plenty of reggae, calypso, and steel drum here, and lots of bagpipe music.

It might be part of the history of the island that's not as widely remembered, but the Scots and the Celts did play a big part in the island's development as a colony, and the music is still widely heard today. One of the most popular bands is the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band, where some of the most celebrated bagpipe music can be heard throughout the year.

The group is a combination of two different bands, actually, the Bermuda Cadets Pipe Band from 1954, and the Bermuda Pipe Band from 1967. These bands, which were originally part of the army and police force, were themselves a continuation of other bagpipe musicians' contributions to the local culture from earlier times. It makes for a fascinating, and complex addition to Bermuda culture in general, and adds another exciting chapter to the history of the island.
